Race day will be sunny with warmer temperatures near 70 by the end of the race. The morning will start off chilly with temperatures in the 40s, so if you're at the track, bring a jacket. Winds during the race will be weaker than today and yesterday, with maximum winds at 10 mph from the northeast.
By Doug Schneider The weather forecast continues to look great for the 105th Indy 500. Clouds at the track this morning will gradually break up in the afternoon, with partial sunshine expected. Winds today will be from the north at 10 to 15 mph, with gusts to around 20 mph. Temperatures will be cool in the lower 60s at most.

Winds during the race will be weaker than today and yesterday, with maximum winds at 10 mph from the northeast. By Doug Schneider The chance of rain continues to be high on Carb Day, but the remainder of the Indy 500 weekend is still expected to have great weather, with plenty of sunshine and cool temperatures.
The timing of rain on Friday is coming into better focus, with the morning having the best chance of seeing showers and maybe a few thunderstorms. The coverage of showers will decrease in the afternoon, but there could still be some on/off showers through the afternoon. Total rainfall amounts around a quarter of an inch are expected on Friday, but again, most of that will be in the morning. I think it will be hard to get the track dry for practice in the afternoon, but that will depend on the frequency of showers hitting the track. There could be enough of a break to get some practice in. Colder air with a high pressure system will build into the area on Saturday. There will be more clouds around in the morning, but they will clear by the afternoon, leaving mostly sunny skies. Highs will only be in the lower to mid 60s, with a north wind at 10 to 15 mph. Race day looks about as nice as you can hope for. Sunny skies, high temperatures around 70, and a northeast wind at 5-10 mph. Bring a jacket to wear in the morning as the day will start off in the upper 40s and 50s. By Doug Schneider There's good news and bad news with the forecast for the Indy 500. The bad news is that the activities won't all be rain free, as it looks like Carb Day could be a wash out. The good news is that race day weather looks great, with sunshine and comfortable temperatures.
A cold front is expected to pass through Indiana on Wednesday, and stall near the Ohio River on Thursday. Meanwhile, a low pressure system wil be taking shape over the Plains, then track east. This system will pull that front back to the north and track along it, right across central Indiana on Friday. This will make showers likely at the Speedway, with a chance of some thunderstorms as well. As of today, I think most of the rain will fall during the morning hours, but there could be showers and storms that persist into the afternoon. So I don't expect that there will be much on-track activity on Carb Day. I'll keep monitoring this system through the week, so stay tuned for updates. The chance of rain on Saturday morning will depend on how quickly the low pressure system exits to the east. The chance of rain will continue until the upper trough moves east of Indiana, which is expected to occur on Saturday morning. There may be a light shower around sunrise, however most of the day should remain dry with no impacts to Legends Day. High pressure will start to build over the region on Saturday, and will be firmly in control of the weather pattern on Sunday. As a result, race day will be dry with mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. It will be a beautiful day to watch the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. By Scott Martin The great news with tonight's update is that rain will not be an issue for the entire weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The bad news is that top speeds may suffer a little as temperatures will be mighty warm, even approaching the 90-degree mark on Sunday for the Fast Nine. Here is the breakdown for both days:
Saturday Practice #6 (9:30 am - 10:30 am) Skies: Partly cloudy. Temperature: 73-77 degrees. Winds: WSW at 5-10 mph. Qualifying Round 1 (12:00 pm - 5:50 pm) Skies: Partly cloudy. Temperature: 82-85 degrees. Winds: WSW at 5-10 mph. Sunday Practice #7 (11:00 am - 12:00 pm) Skies: Mostly sunny.. Temperature: 82-85 degrees. Winds: W at 5-10 mph. Qualifying - Last Row (1:15 pm - 2:30 pm) Skies: Mostly sunny.. Temperature: 87-88 degrees. Winds: W at 5-10 mph. Qualifying - Fast Nine (3:00 pm - 3:45 pm) Skies: Mostly sunny.. Temperature: 88 degrees. Winds: W at 5-10 mph. Practice #8 (5:00 pm - 7:00 pm) Skies: Mostly sunny.. Temperature: 88-86 degrees. Winds: W at 5-10 mph. At this point, looking out in Voodoo Land as it is still more than seven days out, a system will be moving through the area early on Sunday morning (May 30th) that looks to be out of the area several hours before the green flag falls for the 105th Indianapolis 500. Hopefully the track will dry in time and the pre-race ceremonies will not be wet. It will be cooler than what we'll see this weekend, but till on the warm side as projected highs looks to be around 80 degrees. A few showers may be possible on Carb Day, but it will be warm with the projected high around 82 degrees. By: Harris Cooley The forecast has remained consistent for this weekend with partly cloudy skies setting in for Saturday and Sunday. We still see a weak front passing through over night into Sunday that will shift the winds to southeasterly but will still be calm around 4 mph. There is a minimal chance for showers on Saturday morning with mainly partly cloudy skies. This will be great weather for the fans in attendance as they travel back to the historic Monaco GP.
Drivers will be wary of their grip situations with these mild temps and cloudy skies. We have already seen a minor wreck today with grip playing a factor, so teams will definitely be preparing for this. A Low pressure system to the east of the site will keep moisture in the area for the weekend before the frontal passage shifts the winds and air. Overall, this will be great weather for another fantastic race in Monaco. A metric graphic is displayed below... By Scott Martin It will be a very warm weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for qualifying as there will be plenty of sunshine with only a few clouds to help shade those in attendance and for the teams when out on pit road. We may have to deal with a passing shower on Sunday during the afternoon hours, but rain chances are small at this point. Here is the breakdown on the weather:
SATURDAY There will be a mix of sun and clouds throughout the day at the track with temperatures starting off around 73 degrees for the start of the first practice session of the day. The temperature will quickly warm into the 80s by noon and will top out around 85 degrees for the daytime high. Qualifying is scheduled to take place from 12:00 pm to 5:50 pm, and temperatures will go from around 80 degrees at the start to around 85 degrees at 4:00 pm, then only drop a degree by the end of the session. Winds will be out of the south-southwest to start the on-track activity at 5-10 MPH, but will shift to out of the west-southwest by the start of qualifying. Rain is not expected at this point, and dewpoints will be right around 60 degrees. SUNDAY There will be more sunshine on Sunday as skies are expected to be mostly sunny. Temperatures will start off around 79 degrees for the start of the first practice session at 11:00 am and eventually make it up to around 85 degrees for the daytime high. Bump Day qualifying is expected to go from 1:15 pm to 2:30 pm and temperatures will be in the 83-84 degree range. Fast Nine qualifying will start at 3:00 pm with the temperature sitting right at 85 degrees and should stay there until the last qualifying attempt has completed. Winds will be out of the west-southwest at 5-15 MPH and dewpoints will be right around 61 degrees throughout the day. There is a very small chance of an isolated afternoon shower or thunderstorm with odds only at 25% at this point. As for the practice sessions leading up to the weekend, showers and thunderstorms will be likely during the mid to late afternoon hours on Tuesday. The high will be around 70 degrees with rain chances maxing out at 60%. It will be warmer on Wednesday with a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Winds may be gusty at times out of the south reaching as high as 20-25 MPH. The daytime high will top out around 80 degrees. Thursday and Friday look to feature a good bit of sunshine and only a few clouds. We look to stay dry but temperatures will be maxing out around 85 on both days. We'll have radar up and running by Tuesday morning and will be up until the checkered flag falls on Sunday, May 30th. Have a great day! By: Harris Cooley We hop over to one of the most historic tracks in Formula 1 for this weekend at the Monaco Grand Prix. It will be refreshing to see fans in the stand and in the harbor once again, and they will be able to enjoy some beautiful weather while they are there. Temperatures are mild with intermittent cloud coverage throughout the weekend. Wind speeds stay light out of the southeast before a cold front passes Saturday evening into Sunday. No rain is expected to be associated with this frontal passage, but the wind speeds will knock down to 4 mph for race day.
Grip is imperative around this narrow, winding track and the mild temps are not ideal for this necessity. A low pressure system to the east of the area will keep moisture and clouds in the area with the afternoons being sunny. This will make for yet another wonderful race weekend in Monaco. A metric graphic is displayed below... By Doug Schneider The main change to the forecast for Mid-Ohio is a slightly earlier arrival of a chance of showers on Sunday.
In previous forecasts, I mentioned an upper level disturbance that could bring some rain to the area starting Sunday evening. That disturbance appears to be arriving earlier than the models previously showed, so I have moved the timing back, possibly as early as Sunday morning. There are a few caveats with this rain chance - There are models that continue to show a dry day on Sunday, so that is certainly still a good possibility. I only have a 20% chance of rain, which means an 80% chance of dry conditions. If there is any rain, it will only be very light and only a couple hundredths of an inch. That is why I have kept the Impact rating at None with a green flag. There may not be enough rain to require a change to rain tires, and certainly not enough to cause any delays to the race schedule. Overall, the weather over the event still looks good to get out the to track, but you might want to bring a rain coat on Sunday if you want to completely avoid the rain drops. |
