Overall, I was pleased with the forecast for Petit Le Mans. Initially, there was a lot of uncertainty about the timing of rain, but that came into better focus with the 9/29 forecast update. Ultimately, most of the rain came in a narrow window between 8 am and noon Friday. With the fast movement of the cold front, the rain ended earlier than expected Friday, and temperatures dropped more than expected Friday night. Timing is everything.

An excellent NY Times article by Nate Silver on the challenges that meteorologists face every day. An excerpt: The problem with weather is that our knowledge of its initial conditions is highly imperfect, both in theory and practice. A meteorologist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration told me that it wasn’t unheard-of for a careless forecaster to send in a 50-degree reading as 500 degrees. The more fundamental issue, though, is that we can observe our surroundings with only a certain degree of precision. No thermometer is perfect, and it isn’t physically possible to stick one into every molecule in the atmosphere. As expected, showers and thunderstorms are moving into Road Atlanta this morning. Rain amounts through the day are expected to be between 0.5 and 0.75 inches, with up to 1 inch possible if a stronger storm passes over the track. The main window of rain is expected to be from 9 am to around 2 pm. After that, coverage of storms should be more scattered. The chance of rain should end around midnight when a cold front will pass through the area.
Saturday's weather still looks great - plenty of sunshine, but also a little cool and breezy. Highs will be in the mid 60s, with NW winds 10-15 mph gusting to 20-25 mph at times. The timing of the cold front that will be approaching Road Atlanta looks earlier than previously forecast, with the greatest chances of rain coming Friday. Rain showers are expected to begin late Thursday night, and periods of showers and thunderstorms can be expected through the day Friday. The CTSC race and the TUSC qualifying sessions will likely be wet. Some of the stronger storms could produce gusty winds Friday evening. Most of the rain is expected to end around midnight Friday night when the cold front moves through. Total rainfall amounts are expected to be between 0.25 and 0.75 inches around the Atlanta area. Behind the front, cooler and drier air will build in on Saturday, providing sunny skies for Petit Le Mans. It will be breezy with northwest winds 10-15 mph with gusts of 20-25 mph at times through the race.
