What's The Forecast for Friday-Sunday at Road America

6/23/2016

By Scott Martin.
Drier air will work into the area for Friday, as a high pressure area will move in during the overnight hours tonight and into the early morning hours on Friday. Some fog may form during the early morning hours, but otherwise skies will be sunny and temperatures will be warm. Afternoon highs will top out in the upper 70s. Winds will start off out of the northeast at 5-10 MPH during the morning, but will shift out of the southeast at 5-10 MPH during the afternoon. Chance of rain is 0%.
Saturday looks like it will be a great day for track activity at Road America. A cold front will be shifting closer to Wisconsin, and this will bring a southerly flow across the area. Some of the models are showing some isolated showers and thunderstorms forming during the afternoon, but both the NAM and ECMWF are showing a capped airmass during that time, not allowing for any development during the day. Skies will be mostly sunny, and afternoon highs will be warmer as they’ll reach the low 80s. I believe any precipitation activity that forms will hold off until Saturday night, but I’ll keep a 20% chance of rain just to be safe. Winds will be out of the south at 5-15 MPH.
Picture
For Saturday night, showers and thunderstorms will be likely due to the better alignment of low-level convergence with increasing upper-level divergence associated with the right rear quadrant of a jet streak passing to the north on the eastern side of a trough. This will break the cap allowing for shower and storm development. The western half of Wisconsin has been placed under a “Slight Risk” for severe storms by the SPC for Saturday, and the Elkhart Lake and Plymouth areas have been placed under a “Marginal Risk” for severe storms. There is a small chance that some of the storms could be strong to severe, with the main threats from hail and damaging winds.

As the front passes through and heads it’s way to the east on Sunday, there may be a few showers and storms left over. Otherwise, skies will start off mostly cloudy during the morning, but will start to gradually clear out as the afternoon goes on. Temperatures will be warmer, as afternoon highs will be in the mid 80s. Chance of rain is 30%, and should only last until noon. Winds will be out of the west at 5-10 MPH.

We’ll have radar running all weekend long on our site, and I’ll have it up and running on the Pirelli Wold Challenge website (world-challenge.com) as well. Next update will be tomorrow morning. Have a great afternoon and evening.
