Showers are crossing Iowa this morning, and they should be clear of the Speedway by the mid afternoon hours, when the first IndyCar practice session is scheduled. The Indy Lights practice at 2:15 local time could potentially be affected, but I think the chance of that is low. With the morning clouds, highs will reach the lower 90s today.
Saturday is expected to be a very hot day, with high temperatures in the upper 90s, and a heat index reaching near 105. A Heat Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service. It will also be breezy, with gusts between 20 and 25 mph. There is a potential for showers and thunderstorms to move through in the late afternoon and evening. The most likely time for this appears to be between 6 pm and 9 pm local time, just after the race is scheduled to end. We'll have to keep an eye on how storms develop over Minnesota in the afternoon, as the storms will track toward the south-southeast.
A cold front will move through the area Saturday night, which will make for a more comfortable day on Sunday. Highs will be in the mid 80s, with slightly lower humidity. There could be some showers lingering in the area in the morning, but I don't expect any shower and thunderstorms in the area during the afternoon, so the race should be completed with no issues.
