Forecast for Trans Am at VIR

Let me say up front that there is a high level of uncertainty with this forecast. The general weather pattern toward the end of the week across the southeast will be a low pressure area over Florida and Georgia that will be developing and drifting slowly toward the northwest. Meanwhile, high pressure will be drifting east across the Great Lakes and New England. This pattern typically produces an easterly flow off the Atlantic Ocean that spreads moisture inland across the Carolinas and Virginia. However, the forecast models do not agree well on the finer details right now. Some show a stronger high pressure system that pushes all the rain to the south of VIR through the weekend. Others track the low pressure system closer to VIR, and show a lot of rain every day. The Trans Am and SVRA event at VIR could either be very wet or entirely dry.

Given the low confidence I have, I am going to include a chance of rain Thursday through Saturday. Right now, it does look like any rain chance on Thursday will come late in the day, or perhaps even after dark. The best chance of rain appears to be on Friday, but it's a 50/50 chance of the rain staying to the south. This rain could linger into Saturday as well. By Sunday, I expect that the high pressure ridge will build in enough to push most of the rain out of central Virginia. With cloud cover expected to be broken to overcast through most of the event, temperatures should stay relatively cool, with highs in the lower to mid 70s each day. Of course, there is a chance that there could be no rain at all and fewer clouds, which would result in warmer temperatures.

With so much uncertainty in the forecast at this time, you'll want to check in through the week for forecast updates as things come into better focus. Be sure to follow our Twitter feeds and Facebook page for the latest forecasts.
