The main weather impact on the race will be the wind. Southwest winds on Saturday will be between 10 and 20 mph, with gusts to around 25 mph at times. During the race, winds will remain in the 10 to 15 mph range, but it should be less gusty than during the day. Temperatures at the start of the race will be in around 90, falling to the mid 80s by the checkered flag.
By Doug Schneider Today's forecast for the Desert Diamond Phoenix Grand Prix hasn't changed a whole lot from what I forecast on Monday. There continues to be a high pressure ridge over the desert southwest region today, and it will be nearly stationary or drifting slightly to the east over the weekend. Some high clouds will be crossing the Phoenix area at times on Friday and Saturday, but no rain is expected from them. Areas to the north of Phoenix that are at higher elevations may see a sprinkle, but nothing is expected at the track, which is on the south side of the city. Temperatures will be warmer than normal, with highs each day in the lower 90s. The normal high for Phoenix this time of year is around 84 degrees.

By Doug Schneider I had a little fun yesterday with an April Fool's Day forecast for the Desert Diamond Phoenix Grand Prix, but this is the real forecast. And while it's not as exciting weather-wise than the fake forecast, it is certainly much better for fans attending the race.
Friday will start with a high pressure ridge over the area that will provide mostly sunny skies and warm temperatures in the lower 90s. Clouds will start to increase Friday night as that ridge moves toward the east and a trough approaches from the west. Winds will pick up on Saturday ahead of this approaching system, so it will be breezy at times, mainly in the afternoon. Gusts up to 25 mph will be possible. For the race on Saturday evening, it will be mostly cloudy with temperatures falling through the 80s, and into the upper 70s by the end of the race. It will remain a little breezy through the race, but a little less so than Saturday afternoon. I can't rule out the possibility of a sprinkle Saturday night, but at this time it appears more likely to occur after the end of the race. I'm not too concerned about it causing any problems right now, but we'll see if the timing changes at all as we get closer to the weekend. |
